Israel Gershoni is a professor in the Department of Middle Eastern and African History at Tel Aviv University. His publications include Commemorating the Nation: Collective Memory, Public Commemoration, and National Festivals in Twentieth-Century Egypt (University of Chicago Press, 2004), coauthored with James P. Jankowski; Middle East Historiographies: Narrating the Twentieth Century (University of Washington Press, 2006), coedited with Amy Singer and Hakan Erdem; and, Narrating the Nile: Politics, Cultures, Identities (Lynne Rienner Publishers, 2008), coedited with Meir Hatina. More recently, he authored Confronting Fascism in Egypt: Dictatorship vs. Democracy in the 1930s (Stanford University Press, 2010), coauthored with James P. Jankowski, and the forthcoming book Dame and Devil: Egypt and Nazism: 1935-1940 (Tel Aviv: Resling Press, 2012).
