Curt Leviant is a novelist, translator, and taught for many years in the Department of Hebraic Studies, the predecessor of the current Jewish studies department at Rutgers. One of his favorite courses focused on S. Y. Agnon, the only Israeli author to be honored with the Nobel Prize.

Among Leviant’s thirty books are the widely-used anthology, Masterpieces of Hebrew Literature: A Treasury of 2000 Years of Jewish Creativity; his translation and edition of Yudl Rosenberg’s Hebrew classic, The Golem and the Wondrous Deeds of the Maharal of Prague; and translations of many works by Sholom Aleichem, Chaim Grade, and other Yiddish writers.

Leviant has been awarded several National Endowment for the Humanities and National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, and five New Jersey Arts Council fellowships. He is also a prize-winning, internationally published novelist, with ten works of fiction, some of which have been translated into nine European languages and Hebrew.
