The MTI offers a five-day intensive workshop for educators on the history of the Holocaust during a week in July. No prior experience necessary.
Advanced Seminar in Holocaust Education
July 11-12 9:00 am – 3:30 pm
This two-day advanced seminar in Holocaust Education is designed for educators who have completed the History of the Holocaust summer course at Rutgers or an equivalent Holocaust history course. The advanced seminar brings teachers together for further study on Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights Education. It will include a preview of the USHMM’s new exhibit on America and the Holocaust and a session on best practices where teachers present issues in their classrooms.
This comprehensive course presents a chronological history of the Holocaust and will address the following topics:
- Jewish Life Prior to the Great War
- World War I and the Emergence of Nazism
- World War II and the Final Solution
- Victim Groups
- Camps
- Perpetrators, Accomplices, Bystanders
- Rescue and Resistance
- The Aftermath of the Holocaust
- Using Testimonies in the Classroom
- Practical applications in the classroom
This course will give participants the necessary tools to teach and address the complexities involved in teaching this subject matter. Materials used to carry out this goal will include primary source documents, historiographical essays, memoirs, oral histories, and representations of the Holocaust such as film, art, and memorials. Kosher lunch is provided each day.

Pedagogical consultant: Colleen Tambuscio
Colleen Tambuscio is a long time special education and regular education teacher who has been involved in Holocaust and genocide education for the past twenty years and currently teaches at New Milford High School. She has an MA in Jewish-Christian Studies from Seton Hall University, and is an educational consultant to the NJ Commission on Holocaust Education. In 1998, Colleen was named as a Mandel Fellow to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and continues to serve as a US Holocaust Memorial Regional Museum Educator. Tambuscio is the founder and President of the Council of Holocaust Educators, a national professional development organization for educators interested in teaching the Holocaust and genocide.
